Field Extension Workers

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) seeks to recruit dedicated and versatile Field Extension Workers to join our team. The successful candidates will be responsible for overseeing and implementing various activities related to nutrition, agronomy, VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Associations), sustainable land use management, gender aspects, and data collection in the field. This role requires a proactive individual with a strong background in agricultural development and community engagement.
We are seeking the services of Agricultural Field Extension Workers (FEWS) to be located in Bunyangabo, Kabarole, and Kasese in Districts in Rwenzori Region, Kabale, Rukiga, Rubanda and Kisoro in the Kigezi region and Mbale, Bulambuli, Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo in Mt. Elgon region. Each extension worker will be responsible for at least five (5) project villages. He/she will conduct farmer/group training, promoting best practices, encouraging farmers to adopt project interventions, data collection and activity progress monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Implementation of the community and household Participatory Integrated Plans (PIP);
- Train farmers (Farmer Innovators, generation 1 & 2) in clusters in the stipulated topics i.e. Integrated Soil fertility management (ISFM), Good agricultural practices, Nutrition, VSLA, Post harvest handling (PHH), etc and ensure at least 70% of the practices are adopted;
- Train and ensure that prioritized market oriented and VSLAs groups provide financial and market services to their members and non-member farmers;
- Implement farmer support programs, including agronomy and nutrition trainings, farm visits, management of demo plots and input plus out-market support;
- Identify potential risks, develop action plans and report to the supervisor;
- Collect and enter data for the BRIGHT M&E system;
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with staff, local partners, and stakeholders;
- Provide technical backstopping to farmer innovators and Generation 1 farmers and other project support personnel at ground level;
- Participate fully in refresher trainings organized by BRIGHT project.
Requirements
- Diploma or certificate in either agriculture, agribusiness, forestry, or related qualification with competence and passion in extension work, farmer/group mobilization and training;
- Being a resident, understanding the local language and local knowledge of the area of operation is a must;
- Proven experience with running farmer training;
- Willingness and ability to work extensively in rural areas with farmers.
Reporting and Work Relationships
The Field Extension workers reports to the Project Field Officers based in IFDC field offices in Mbale, Rwenzori and Kigezi regions.
Duration
The contract is a 8-months assignment effective from the 1st November 2025, through to 30th June 2026 unless amended in writing and agreed upon by both Parties.
Terms of payment
- Based on the monthly targets set out for each month, a FEW will be paid upon entering and submission of verified data to MIS as per the targets set for that month.
- The facilitation allowance is Ugx.600,000 (Six hundred thousand Uganda Shillings only) monthly subject to 6% withholding tax and to completing the targets set for that month. However, for the FEWs who occasionally achieve more than the targets, we can pay the excess up to Ugx 100,000 to motivate them, making occasional payment of Ugx. 700,000.
- The monthly activity report should be submitted on the 30th of every month for review and approval.
- A monthly payment for the Transport of Ug. Shs 300,000 (Three hundred thousand Uganda Shillings only), Airtime of 70,000 (Seventy thousand Uganda Shillings only) will be provided to each FEW.
