The Duty Editors (Luganda & English Desk) will oversee and coordinate the day-to-day news gathering operations, obtain well-researched and most up-to-date reports on news events and ensure that submitted news copy meets established editorial objectives, journalistic ethics, house style, and is delivered within set deadlines.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the delivery of daily news including breaking news.
  • Assign stories to reporters across NMGU platforms.
  • Prioritise story coverage.
  • Review stories to ensure that tey meet editorial objectives, house style, and journalistic ethics.
  • Evaluate news for authenticity and check sources.
  • Check for legal and ethical issues in journalists’ copy.
  • Monitor the reporters’ productivity, general content and appraise their performance.
  • Ensure the accuracy, consistency and quality of news content across various platforms, including print, broadcast. online. and multimedia.
  • Collaborate with the audience engagement team to identify opportunities for reader interaction and participation. Monitor audience feedback and incorporate it into editorial decision-making processes.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Academic: University Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from an accredited institution.
  • Professional: Diploma in Journalism.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant journalism experience; including 3 years at supervisory level and experience as a News Editor with demonstrable understanding of the media.

  • Ability to work quickly to meet deadlines while thinking creatively about new ways to tell stories.

  • Highly organised and can manage multiple stories at once
  • Ability to deploy quickly for all platforms
  • Strong communicator in order to share information effectively to all areas within the organisation
  • Full understanding of how content reaches audiences on all platforms with solid knowledge of digital distribution and data.
  • Full knowledge of media law
  • Tactical application of the different content types (including photo, video and graphical journalism) to maximise audience impact.
  • Digital & data literate with the ability to work with audience data
  • Business acumen
  • Motivational leader and coach who can provide on-job training
  • Excellent organisational skills
