Description

The British Council is hiring an Accountant that supports the financial accounting activities for the British Council operations in Sudan and other countries within the cluster (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique). The role works closely with the Managed Service Provider (MSP) to ensure the financial accounts are completed correctly in a timely manner and numbers are reported accurately.

 

Contract Duration: Indefinite

Salary: UGX 3,398,336.00

Location: Kampala, Uganda

 

Right to work: You must have the legal right to work in the country at the time of application. Mobility / relocation / visa sponsoring support will not be provided.

 

Main Accountabilities But Not Limited To The Following

Finance and Resource Management

 

  • Work closely with the MSP and British Council controllership teams to support the delivery of retained P2P, O2C, R2R and CLM financial processes in Sudan and other countries in SSA Cluster 2, ensuring consistent, accurate and robust financial accounting in line with accounting practices and corporate policies. Maintain financial records as per corporate policy and internal audit.
  • Complete all financial accounting and reporting tasks required for the financial month-end and year-end pre-closing steps and provide support as required for the financial month-end and year-end closing steps, including, TB review, manual journals and off-system payments requests, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant policies.
  • Process customer transactions and income collection accurately and in a timely manner. Complete daily cash reconciliations. Ensure integrity of cash collection and customer refund processes. Ensure compliance with treasury policy and submit relevant documents to local bank (where applicable) as requested, including bank mandate updates.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

 

  • Proactively communicate and liaise with others (inside and outside the British Council) to ensure effective coordination and delivery of finance services. Build an understanding of stakeholders within the wider department, unit or region to enable effective resolution of issues when they arise.
  • Assist business unit leads and operations teams in SSA Cluster 2 with finance related queries arising from the post-transformation operating model. Support their understanding and adoption of MSP-supported P2P, CLM, O2C and R2R processes in-country, escalating issues to the FC – SSA Cluster 2 as required.

Managing Self And Others

 

  • Plan and prioritise own activities, respond to changing and at times competing requirements to ensure effective delivery of responsibilities over set reporting timescales. Provide a good standard of financial administration and financial discipline. Task and coordinate others to complete activities in accordance with agreed financial procedures.

Requirements Of The Role

 

  • Knowledge of statutory accounting principles and practices, including accruals and the impact of financial transactions.
  • Proven accounting experience.
  • Advanced experience of Excel.
  • SAP experience
  • Written and verbal proficiency in English is required in addition to Native/Fluent Arabic to support Sudan operation

Desirable

 

  • Experience of working in an international organisation and/or relevant employer.
  • Good level of understanding of relevant software.
  • Financial analytical experience.
  • Recognised accounting qualification
